I met Nancy Mills through the power of the internet. We clicked instantly: The Gutsy Gal meets the Spirited Woman. Yes, Nancy is the founder of The Spirited Woman (www.thespiritedwoman.com), a leading women’s empowerment community. Three years ago, Nancy created a very special project, The Sisterhood of the Sacred Scarves. The Spirited Woman Prayer Scarf is a symbol of spirit, empowerment and beauty. A portion of all scarf proceeds is donated to the Spirited Woman Foundation (www.thespiritedwoman.com/foundation) to help heal and support women through actions of empowerment. To date, there have been 13 scarves, each representing a different theme. 100s of women worldwide have purchased 1000s of scarves. Something remarkable has happened with her 13th scarf ANGEL WINGS (www.thespiritedwoman.com/prayer_scarf). Since it is Spirited Woman’s first ever “pink” scarf and with Breast Cancer Awareness Month upon us, women worldwide have started to buy the scarf as a symbol of empowerment and love for themselves, a friend, a family member – or simply as a symbol of support. I myself purchased one so that Nancy could donate it to a woman undergoing chemo in a local hospital. I urge you to read more about Nancy and to support this wonderful cause.

Here is my interview with Nancy Mills
Can you tell our audience about a little bit about Yourself?
I would say from the time I was a little girl – I knew I was different. Maybe it was the Annie Oakley skirt with the fringe that my mother bought me – but I was determined to live my life as an adventure and I was deeply committed to helping others. I just didn’t know how I was going to do that. It took several careers (one as a travel journalist) to finally arrive at my destiny: Spirited Woman. And even when I arrived I didn’t know where I was being led. I’ve owned Spirited woman for 15 years now, and it was only until the last three years that I knew where I was headed. Someone asked me – if you had one dream what would it be? I answered, I would like to start my own foundation so I could give back and help support others. He then said to me you don’t have to know the “how” you just need the dream. Well, that “how” turned out to be the Spirited Woman Prayer Scarf and the Sisterhood of the Sacred Scarves. Yes, there are other aspects to my business that I love, but that is my heart and my vehicle for helping others – particularly now with breast cancer.
What makes you a Gutsy Gal?
I am a Gutsy Gal because I am a Spirited Woman. I know, you can laugh now – but that is the truth. I started a women’s empowerment community because I wanted every woman to BELIEVE she is enough as she is. Because she is. I guess you would say it became my mission in life – since as a child I was very rarely told that I was enough and it caused huge self-esteem issues for me. But I was DETERMINED to support others – in particular women. I wanted a place in this world for women to support each other, offer a community of inspiration and joy and fulfillment. So, in a way I did not expect – since I always viewed myself as not being enough – I became the cheerleader for others to be enough. And that was not easy. But, you know what? By helping others, I was able to help myself and to me that is GUTSY. I learned how to teach workshops, I learned how to create my own website, I learned how to use social media, I learned how to write blog posts, I learned how to take my own pictures, and I learned that by having A MISSION IN LIFE nothing can stop you except yourself. So gutsy – you betcha. Spirited – you betcha. And as I always say MAY THE FORCE BE WITH US.
In your experience, How does it feel to be Gutsy?
Personally it feels great. There are days – and I don’t care who you are – from the most famous actress in the world to the president of the United States – where we all feel down. And it is those days that I find make us appreciate the days where we feel gutsy – where we can break down barriers, achieve whatever we want, basically dance to the beat of our own drummer. And to me that feels POWERFUL. And when I tap into that power, I feel gutsy.
What would you say is am important lesson you’ve learned?
I’ve learned many important lessons. Probably the one that I am determined to pay the most attention to is “trusting my intuition.” When I was a kid, I had these “psychic hits” for lack of a better description. And instead of being honored and listened to by my family – I was discounted. That set up a pattern for me not to listen to my intuition – I went for years second guessing myself. But, as I got older I realized that my intuition was my gift, my anchor, my truth – and by listening to it I was one step ahead of the game. My advice to you: do not discount that voice that lives within you for it is your barometer and it is your guide.
Finally, What does BEING A GUTSY GAL mean to you?
I honestly don’t know any other way to live. I am single. I run my own business, lead a women’s community, pay my own salary, help take care of my mom, pay her bills, handle our family affairs and on and on. What would happen if I hid in the corner and basically said, “I can’t do this?” I have no idea who would do any of this for me. So being gutsy is the WAY I LIVE MY LIFE – at times sure, I want to run off to an island, but if I was honest, I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished and I thrive on thriving.
